The #1 best performance for $'s spent it to make sure everything is operating at its best - flow, spark, sensing, timing, etc.

Re: performance

well cold air intake is a good idea but your better off building your own instead of spending $200 on one that does the same thing, k&n air cleaners, a high flow mass air flow sensor, high flow 58mm throttle body, a throttle body spacer, not sure but i think you could get a fuel pressure regulator and set the pressure a little higher, you could look up some tpis hints on how to make the tpi flow better, performance chip, headers and a 3in exaust from the cat back will do you good if you dont already have an exaust system. dont forget about diffrent heads, intake manifold and cams. you could have a 3 angle vaulve job done on your stock heads..... there are endless possabilitys it all depends on how much $$$$ you got

Re: performance

the cheapest way to make your car faster is get rid of everything in the car you don't need to make it lighter. that includes cleaning all of the dirt off of the undercarriage.

Posts #'s 2 & 5. That's about the end of the "cheap" things.

I wouldn't call heads "cheap". Or exhaust, although exhaust is needed before you spend any money beyond posts #'s 2 & 5.

I wouldn't spend money on a "performance chip". The better investment is getting the equipment and software to do your own chips. Again, not "cheap", but probably the best way to spend your money. An '89 will be MAF, which doesn't see as much improvement, and isn't as sensitive to other changes, as the '90-'92 speed density systems.

As usual, performance costs money. There aren't any "free" things you can do that will make big differences in performance. There are things that you can do that are "better" than other things, though, like synthetic engine oil, transmission fluid, and gear lube, that should be changed anyway, and while you're at it, spend a little more coin to get something a lot better.

I wouldn't put a K&N air filter on any vehicle I liked. They are nothing more than an expensive way to let more dirt into your engine.
