Cam swap, have a few questions
Hey all I recently bought my first third gen and am going to be doing some work to it over the winter, including my first cam swap.
I am installing a cc305 cam. I know I need to change the springs. I am looking at either the comp cams CCA-986-16 springs or the TPIS 700-132 springs. The tpis springs are singe, stock diameter. The comps are dual and the heads would need machine work for them to fit. Anyone have any suggestions on which of these springs I should use?
Now for the lifters, should I reuse the stock lifters or replace them? I'm thinking I should replace them. What would be a good replacement? An oem roller lifter or a high perf. roller lifter?
I am also going to be changing the rockers. I haven't decided if I am going to run 1.5's (.510 lift) or 1.6 (.544 lift). Besides putting in screw in studs will the heads need any addition machining to run this cam with that much lift?
Thanks for the help and I apologize for being a dumb@ss!

Re: Cam swap, have a few questions
As far as installing this type of cam check out this link they had the same type of question
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...stall-tpi.html
As far as the springs go, they both have the same coil bind of 1.15 so the diameter would be your concern as well as retro fitting your head to fit the dual spring. It might be a better idea to go with the single spring but again it just depends on what you want .
Also check the dowl pin length as was stated in the link.
Going to 1.6 rockers, you want to check your piston to valve clearance.
As far as the lifters go, you can go with a set of crane's oe hydraulic roller lifters. They will hold up.

Re: Cam swap, have a few questions
Thanks for the info and the link. I did a search earlier and did not see that.
I like the tpis springs because I can reuse my stock retainers but I am worried about valve float because they are only a single spring. Is that something I should be concerned about?

Re: Cam swap, have a few questions
if you have the 083 heads like i think you do then youll need to clearance the valve seals. either youll need an offset retainer or lock OR you need to mill down the valve guide i think it is. you can do what i did and buy manley 24610-16 spings and 23652-16 retainers and thatll give enough clearance for .510 of lift. those retainers are offset +.050 giving you that much more clearance for the seals allowing for more lift safely. as for the 1.6 rockers im not to sure if you could get away with them like onfire said but ask someone who knows for sure.

Re: Cam swap, have a few questions
Thanks,
So if I use those manley springs and retainers I won't have to do any machining to the heads?
Also was that the correct part number for the springs? I have was able to find the retainers but cannot find any springs with that part number. Any chance it is the 22410-16 springs?
Edit: I would have to shim the spring up about .050" with those springs and retainers right?

Re: Cam swap, have a few questions
you probably have the right spring number if its their 1.250" OD spring with the inner damper. im not sure about the shimming. basically just check them once installed to get them installed at 1.750".
