TPI engine building question
TPI engine building question
I've been looking around the site and message boards for a while and wanted to see if I could get some advice on an engine I'm building.
I have a complete intake/TPI setup from an '89 IROC, and rebuilt short block 355 that uses flat lifters, a pair of iron heads from a late-60s Chevy (63cc; ~9.5:1 compression), and a hydraulic cam: 214/224 duration at .050 (advertised 280/290).
From what I've read on here it sounds like the cam is as far from stock as I can go without causing problems, but I'm not certain that it will work.
My main question is if the TPI setup will function with this older-style cam and block? A roller retro-fit is out of my budget..
Any insights or advice (or references to relevant threads or sites) are greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Roller lifters were incorporated for other reasons, not for TPI. The '85-'86 LB9 TPI engines had flat tappet lifters.
The main drivers are cam overlap and LSA. Too much overlap and too little LSA will drive the O2 sensor bonkers. You didn't say what your cam LSA is, but it's probably okay for your set-up.
Do your heads have the accessory holes on the ends? Big problem if they don't.

Re: TPI engine building question
Thanks and thanks for the reply
I know at least one of the heads has two accessory holes, I'll have to check on the other one..
I'm not sure how to calculate the LSA and overlap, but from what I'm finding it looks like the cam has a small overlap.
Everything I have on it:

Thanks again!
