3.1L Lifters

Hi All ! ! !

Does anyone know what kind of lifters are in the 3.1L 90-92 v6? I want to reuse them when I change my cam if they are Hydraulic Flat Tapplet, but I want to be prepared if they are roller.
----------
One more thing ! ! ! Are the lifters used in this engine the same as the ones in sbc? Would I just be able to by some for sbc and use them on the 3.1l?

Re: 3.1L Lifters

AFAIK they are rollers. But I'm not sure, since I know basically nothing about the 6-cyl motors.

No they are not the same as V8.

If they are flat, you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT re-use them. If they are rollers, you can.

Re: 3.1L Lifters

Crazy as it sounds but they are flat tappet hydraulic. The later year engines based on this block did get rollers. So they are available if you want to upgrade. And as the king-of-sofa's posted, you can not reuse them on a different cam. Can re-use on the same cam, but only if they go back onto the same lobe.

I know our '92 Lumina 3.1 has flat tappet, but I wasn't sure what all the differences were between f-body and FWD sedan.

Re: 3.1L Lifters

OK, so just buy new lifters then, take all the ifs, ands, or buts out of the equation. I have the PowerMax Hydraulic Lifter Camshaft from crane for the engine, part# 253941 - RPM 1800-5400; Adv. Dur. 272 Init./284 Exh.; Valve Lift .454 Int./.480 Exh.; Lobe Angle 112 deg. Anyone know where I can get a new set of lifters for my engine? Tried Jegs and Summit, they don't have for camaro 2.8/3.1 lifters. Does the cam have to high of a lift for roller lifters? Could I just get some good condition used ones?

RBob.
Will the older flat-tappet engine's block have the provisions for the lifter 'spider' that the newer engines used though? Or does one have to use a retrofit roller lifter set like the pre-87 SBC engines do?
