Emissions question

I am looking at possibly buying a 1983 camaro z-28 that needs a emissions check after I purchase it since it has no cat know it will fail. My question is what else besides the cat, egr, and o2 sensor should I be looking at to make sure is there. Those are the only things i know about emissions. All of the other f-bodys around here are selling for 3000 and up but I talk this guy down to 1700. Is it reasonable to think I could get this car IM'd, assuming the engine is the stock block and all, for less than the 1300 dollar difference. The egr is there it just needs to be reconnected to the vacuum line. I would do all the work myself expect for the cat. I am moving out of the state in one year so it only has to pass once. I am in alaska but am told the laws are almost exactly like CA.

Thjanks ahead of time. Was hoping to have enough money left over to put a new intake and cam in it after it passes.

Re: Emissions question

I dont know about other states, but when you buy a car from someone and the title is transfered, you dont need to take the emissions for about 2 years. In Illinois, the made it so pre 96 cars dont need to take emissions, but my car still needed to pass once. Well, all I did was have the title transfered from my dads name to mine and just like that I never had to take emissions.
If that's the case, you dont have anything to worry about it. Otherwise, you are able to take the emissions test unlimited times until you pass as long as you prove that you are trying to make it pass and not just wasting their time. So reconnect the egr, and put the cat in and take it over there. Also, the cat works better if it's hotter, so right before you pull in, floor it around the block a few times.

Re: Emissions question

Here in alaska I need to test it prior to being able register it. It must pas a test within 90 days prior to reg. I think pay for the test and they can tell me why it failed. I just am hoping to not have to put more than 1300 into trying to get it to pass.

Re: Emissions question

There should be a waiver amount, after you spend $400 in IL to get it fixed you can fill out a waiver form, then after a quick visual inspection they pass you.

In most states (CA and CO I know for a fact), the seller is responsible for getting it through emissions testing. You might want to check that before you spend a penny on it.

The waiver`s only apply if all the stock smog equipment are on the car, not if it is missing necessary parts. Check with your local DMV before buying this car or you may have headaches you don`t want. See if the seller will let you take it to a mechanic and get an estimate to put it in "smog legal" shape and then make an offer.
