Car Won't Run

Car is an 85 Iroc with a 305 TPI from an 88 in it. The car will not run and it is getting spark, fuel, and the timing is on. Most of the time when trying to start it, it will continue to try and start but never will. One odd problem I found is that when putting your finger over the rubber elbow that comes out of the valve cover on the pass. side and you crank the engine over, there is a very large amount of pressure that is coming out of it. What can this be from? What else should I look into to get it running?

Re: Car Won't Run

Did this car ever run while you have owned it? If it was running before, the best thing to do is go back to the last time it ran well. Then think about everything that has happenned since then.

You say it is getting fuel? Do you have at least 40 psi? You may be getting fuel through the line but if the pressure is not high enough it will not run.

You say it is getting spark? Did you check every plug or just the coil output? I have had many coils on these cars go bad and seem to give a spark when checked but can't produce a spark under load (compression)

Have you checked compression on all cylinders? They should all be within 10%

I would take the air filter off and hold a gasoline soaked rag in front of the intake or use some starting fluid to see if it will run for a second and then die. Be careful when you do this because if the engine backfires out the intake you can get burned. You have been warned...

More testing, please...
