Timing Chain Replacement Question

Hey guy's,

Help me out on something.

It's been quite a number of years since I've played around with a 3rd Gen car. I've had about 10 of them over the years and currently just pulled my 88 Formula 305 TBI out of storage.

Timing chain is loose (128K) and due for replacement which is how I bought it as a project quite a number of years ago. I've recently done it in my 350 TBI Silverado and the 4.3 K-1500 so I'm asking this question after just looking at the 3rd gen.

Is there enough room to drop the pan enough after dropping the exhaust headpipe to remove the timing chain cover without unbolting the motor mounts and lifting the engine a bit??

I see in the searches that a few have done it. Just wanted to "confirm" that there is enough room under there.

We've got a little "mild streak" going here in PA temperature-wise and I'm considering getting under there and doing a quick timing chain replacement.

Thanks,

Re: Timing Chain Replacement Question

It's do-able. Drop the exhaust if it has a y-pipe, unbolt the oil pan. Should drop down enough to remove the timing cover.

It's a tight fit but you can replace the oil pan gasket with a new one piece when you get to that point..

Have fun!

Re: Timing Chain Replacement Question

Thanks very much for the quick reply.

Some of the threads I saw were asking the same question but I wanted to confirm that it has actually been done. I knew I saw threads by people saying that they've done it in the past. It's nice to be sure.
