Priming an Engine

I'm kinda new in the gear head world, I was lookin to get a third gen for my first car to start ripping apart. I was looking at this formula that had been sitting for about a year or so, I wanted to try to start it obviously before I made an offer. What would be the eaisest way to prime the engine to get that oil flowing back through it!

Re: Priming an Engine

get an oil pump primer they are cheap, use a drill and spin it for a few minutes. you have to pull the distributer out to do this, just make sure you carefeullu mark it for re install. if its been sitting for a while, pull all the plugs and squirt some transmission fluid into the chambers and let it sit for a couple days. this will help the rings incase they are frozen in the bores. but spin the drill on the primer untill you start to see oil coming up through the pushrods....the rear pushrods will see oil first, once you are satisfied that enough oil has circulated in the motor, slowly turn it over by hand and not by the starter....once its all free and oiled. turn the motor over without the plugs in it to help push out some of the trans fluid. re install the plugs and fire it up. It will smoke alot until the trans fluid is burned off. A habit it use for my race car is fogging the motor before it gets put away for the winter....trans fluid down the carb and crank it over with no spark. that keeps the rings from sticking to the bores. good luck and welcome to the world of cars.....best hobby on the planet.

All of this "priming" stuff is unnecessary.
