whats this for?
im guessing that its for the emissions but what is it actually for? im finding shat like this all over my car i found a tube comming from the carb plugged up with a screwdriver bit!
this car was owned by morons in its past and i intend to get it back to normal and i have fixed alot thanks to tgo
but ive got a feeling its gonna be awhile before shes perfect i should also tell you that its down around the bottom of the engine on the passenger side

Re: whats this for?
Difficult to see in the pic. If it's located between the exhaust manifold and the Y pipe, it's probably the EFE valve. Essentially, the butterfly closes to help warm the engine.

That's the EFE valve. Still has the short piece of rubber hose that connects to the hard line that goes up to the TVS on the intake manifold. It's purpose is to push exhaust gases through a passage under the intake manifold plenum to warm it up and prevent fuel from pooling in the plenum - Early Fuel Evaporation, you see.
Disconnected just leaves it open all the time (better than closed all the time). Haven't run one on my car since 2001.

Re: whats this for?
so can it be deleted or do it have to stay? and is there a performence difference with or without one? the tube that connects it to the top of the moter somwhere just cracked off maybe an hour ago and i cant find where it connects

On the FAQ forum there is a thread with vacuum diagrams. It doesn't show pictures, but all of the components are in the same relative positions on the diagram and engine.
It doesn't make a lot of difference as far as performance goes. Until you replace the manifolds with headers, the primary restriction will be there whether the EFE valve is or not. Edelbrock TES L69 headers reuse the valve between the passenger header and y-pipe. All other headers eliminate the valve.

Re: whats this for?
good because im soon gonna be in the market for headers anyway
those manifolds are just plain uglyyy but when the time comes what else should be removed along with the valve?

Re: whats this for?
the AIR Pump (also called smog pump) and associated tubing, it adds weight and doesn't help emissions all that much beyond what the cat does.

If you have visual emissions inspection, you'll need the A.I.R. stuff.

Re: whats this for?
Mine had a spacer between the passenger manifold and y-pipe where that valve probably used to be. Had a heck of a time trying to get it to seal up after dropping the exhaust to weld up SFC's. Just couldn't get it to sit square. I still have it sitting in my garage someplace now that I've installed headers.

Carbed cars had the valve, TPI's the spacer.
