timing issue?

I have a 82 camaro which i have completely ripped the ecm and its harness out.
I installed a 350, but i can't get it to run.
When i pull the number 1 spark plug to time it, The engine DOES blow my finger off on the compression stroke, so i know the valves are closed at the correct time and that the chain is in the correct spot. How do i install the distributor to ensure the rotor is in the correct spot?

Re: timing issue?

Set #1 to top dead center, and decide where you want the rotor pointing for the #1 cylinder. Rotate the rotor counter clockwise, about 35 to 40 degrees back from where you want it, and slide it in. Make sure it seats ALL THE WAY. You may have to use a long screwdriver to turn the oil pump drive so it lines up, and engages properly.

You aren't trying to use the computer controlled distributor are ya?

Re: timing issue?

No, i'm using a stock HEI with coil in cap. It is sparking just fine, just not actually starting the engine. I think i will clean my plugs and try to start again, I may have fuel fouled them trying to crank so much.
