hard starting

It's winter here so i'm thinking this is probably winter related but I need to know whats wrong.
It's hard to start sometimes, what happens is when i turn the key the starter spins but but doesn't seem to make contact with the flywheel and this will happen several times untill fianlly it will crank the engine.

whats wrong and what can i do about it quick, i'm worried it will not start and leave me stranded.

Re: hard starting

are you saying the starter needs replaced ?

could it have just been that the solenoid was cold or frozen in place and that the battery was weak from being cold/frozen also?

This doesn't sound like it has anything to do with either cold or the battery. Sounds like a typical starter failure from just use and wear.

There's a sprag in a starter, that only allows force to be exerted one way; which is of course, the starter turning the engine. If the engine is turning faster than the starter, the sprag allows the starter motor to spin at its own rate, disengaged from the engine. It wears out, and fails to transmit power in the normal direction, as well. What you hear is the solenoid pull in (loud click), followed by a high-pitched spinning noise, instead of the normal engine starting sound.

From your description, sounds like that's what you've got. Yerbasic worn-out starter. Just get another one and change it out. No big deal, not even very much money, like less than $40.

Re: hard starting

cky,

You need to start your own thread...

The original poster in this thread has a starter problem. I'm talking to him about his starter.

Yours sound like your starter is fine, but rather your engine has a no-run problem. It "turns over" (starter spins the engine) just fine, but it doesn't "start" (begin running). Whole different thing.
