What to do with these 081's?

Alright so I got my car ready (tbi to carb swap) and i picked up a set of low mile 081 heads (from a boat). Now i want my car to be pretty hopped up and streetable (ill goto the track now and then)

What should i have done to these heads? up them to 1.94 1.50 valves or go 2.02 1.60? and since im streeting the car should i have them ported or not?

also what cam can i use? i have a stock stall and th350 trans

i have a 350, not a 305.

1.94/1.60" valves will be fine.

Definitely port them. And new valve springs & retainers. Cut the guides for positive-type stem seals. Pin the rocker studs or have screw-in studs installed.

Unless you're willing to up the stall, you won't be able to handle much more than something in the 260-ish advertised duration.

Re: What to do with these 081's?

if your willing to put money into them, i'd go do a nice port job on them, basically cleaning up the runner paths, and doing alittle bowl work on them. basic home porting type stuff to gain some flow, you'll need it.

those heads are like the 083 350 heads but with a smaller chamber. I'm not sure of the stock valve size on them i thought they were 1.94/1.50 but perhaps a tad smaller. I'd go ahead and run atleast 1.94 valves/1.50 exhaust. If you want to spend money on them, do 2.00-2.02's which will require new seats/valve job etc.

Get screw in studs installed or pin the stock studs. shave the guide boss down to handle higher lift cams. stock is only good to about .480". Get it to handle atleast .550" with no clearance problems, and then run a cam in the .500-.520 lift range. cam duration will vary depending on your goals.

Look into getting the spring pockets widened to handle larger diameter springs. But if you use a good spring like Patriot GOLD springs which are popular in the LS1 crowd, or comp 941's also an LS1 type spring, they should fit right in the stock pocket and will handle .600 lift. they have good spring pressures for hydraulic roller cams as well as flat tappets.

kinda alot of cash to be spending on stock iron heads tho..you could get worked over vortecs for the same price and get more power, just have to run vortec intake stuff

Re: What to do with these 081's?

stock rocker arm studs are pressed into the head....meaning with enough pressure pushing out on them, as in from strong springs and big lift cams, they can pull out and thats NOT good.

screw in studs are threaded in. you have a machine shop tap the head for these studs. much stronger they wont pull out

pin the studs is drilling a hole in the base of the rocker stud boss and the pressed-in stud itself and inserting a pin to help hold down the rocker stud. they will not pull out since the pin is now holding the stud down in the rocker arm boss
