Removing '83 smog set up
Removing '83 smog set up
After following some very good tech article on this site, I have started doing a few jobs. I'm currently switching to carb but when I lifted the bonnet to have a good look, I noticed that all the smog rubbish was still attatched. I want to bin this ASAP
The manifolds have four individual holes for the system to feed into and what appears to be a one way valve on each side. The actual pump is individually driven (Not a serpentine belt) So here's what I think I need to do:
Disconnect the pump and remove it altogether. Remove all pipework up to the valves. Cap off the valves OR remove the pipework and plug each hole with a short bolt and exhaust paste. There is a vacuum pipe running to what seems to be a distribution valve. I presume this would no longer be needed to could be capped.
Now I could be wide of the mark here and might miss a glaringly obvious no-no but it seems to be relatively simple. Am I doing it right or is there more to it?

Re: Removing '83 smog set up
While i am not sure of the 83 system i am doing the same to my 89 350. Took off the smog pump and all associated hoses. Going to cap the pipe going to the cat. Just picked up plugs for the exhaust manifolds from NAPA. Was $6 for 8. I am retuning the computer and will eliminate it in the retune.
Re: Removing '83 smog set up
Basically correct, but let me offer up 2 points:
1. Just cap off at the end of the one-way valves. Don't try to unscrew the 4 individual fittings. That's work to be done on your bench with the manifolds off the car. If you try it you will end up taking the manifolds off the car and doing it on the bench anyway because you're shure to snap some of them off or hopelessly round the corners off the nuts.
2. I believe there is also a tube that goes from the distribution or "diverter valve" down to the catalytic converter. You'll need to cap that off as well or cut the pipe down by the cat converter and weld/braze a cap on the tube or you'll have an exhaust leak.
Other than that, everything's good to go.

Re: Removing '83 smog set up
Yes she turns heads and nope, she's LHD. I'm really lucky as England's no1 drag strip, Santa Pod is five miles from my house and The biggest American car show is held in Billing, about 10 miles away. What do you think of the American Racing wheels. The guy I bought it off put them on and I really like the look that it gives the car.
