My Camaro Died:( Help me dianose the problem
My 87 2.8l Camaro died a few weeks ago and we had to tow it back to my house. Since then I haven't had much time to look at it to find out whats wrong. Now that its getting warmer out here I want to try to get it running again.
The story goes....as soon as winter came It started making this clanking sound near the center counsel. At first I really didn't notice it too much, and I thought ahh, maybe its just because of the cold. As the weeks went on it got louder and louder and I started getting really worried. A few days before it broke down it stalled as I was starting it up. Then one day I decided that it wasn't getting any better and that I was going to get it checked as soon as possible, that same day it died on the high way and I had to get it towed. That was in early December sometime.
Here are the factors--------
- It had half a tank of gas(so I'm sure I didn't run out of gas
)
- made a clanking sort of sound
- stalled a few times, rpm wavered when I started it.
- it lost power and just died on the highway as I was accelerating, and I came to a rolling stop.
- The lights come on when I turn the key but now when I try to start it, it makes a loud sequel sound as it tries to turn over.
The tow truck driver said it might be a bearing somewhere, my dad said it might be the distributer shaft.
I did a tune up last fall with Bosh platinum plugs and wires and I also changed the oil. Maybe its my fault for not changing the oil since fall.
If someone could give me a hint on what it might be it would be helpful when I try to diagnose the problem. I haven't had anyone look it over yet.
Much Appreciated
THanks
OHHH BTW. Its a 87 v6 2.8L, 5sp standard

Don't panic just yet.
It may be that the smog pump, water pump or alternator locked up.
Take the fan belt off, turn it over with the starter and see if the screech is gone.
