Intro/ question/ pics
Hey I'm new to the forum. I'm 19, living in California, oh and I'm a girl
I've always loved Camaros and Birds but have not had the chance to own one untill recently when I got a 1990 Firebird SSA. It has 17 in Edelbrock rims, flowmaster dual exhaust, t-tops, great interior/exterior, custom GTO hood
I love the car but, obviously, it has..issues. I put $2000 worth of work in the engine alone, now i just need to get the tags up to date. After having the exhaust leak fixed it passed smog but my mechanic said the oil pan is leaking (greeeaaat). So my question is, when I drive the car the oil gauge goes up and down like crazy. It will be fine while I'm on the gas but as soon as I start to slow down it goes down past the half way mark. Is this being caused by the oil pan leaking or is it something else?
Thanks!
Hope these pictures show up...

Re: Intro/ question/ pics
Oil pressure is relative to RPM.
THe pressure will drop as the engine speed slows down, so it seems normal.
Do you happen to know the amount of pressure you have at idle? That is
important to know, as well as pressure at cruise and maximum RPM used.
Keep an eye on that leak and oil level. If the oil level gets below the pump
pick-up tube, it's dangerous to the motor as it will have zero pressure and
volume.

Thanks for the advise...
I don't know the amount of pressure, not even sure how I would test that as I'm not a mech...
So the oil pan doesnt have to be fixed as long as I make sure the oil level isnt too low??

Cool...sweet car...looks way better than mine. Glad to see a girl is not in Mustang and in a product of the General!
Th oil pan leak is an easy fix...drain oil, pull pan off, clean it up, replace gaskets, bolt it up put new oil in. I have done it on my 78, had to take off the two engine mount bolts and jack the engine up an inch. Not sure if you have to do this for you bird.

Re: Intro/ question/ pics
as far as checking the pressure at idle, just turn the car on put it in drive, hold the brake and watch the gauge, it should level out, when you hit the gas, the rpms will rise and so will the oil pressure.
Make sense? lol its pretty simple, alot of things are overtalked and end up being really simple
