Plz help on parts list for 383 install.

Hi everyone, I have looked at many options for my car but over the last 4 months I have decided to go with a GM-ZZ383-425HP, B&M TH400, Ford 9" w/3.25's and I have been slowly saving for it all but I wanted to ask people here what carb, intake, headers and anything else they think i should run to get the most out of this engine.

Thanks, steve.

Sounds like a potent combo.

What do you plan on doing with it, race it, drive it occasionally, drive it daily?

I assume you have a proper torque converter in the mix as well.

Re: Plz help on parts list for 383 install.

Yeah I was going to run a stall around 2300, It will be a weekend/strip car.
But i need it reliable so if my d/d has any problems i can fall back on the T/A for a week or so while I fix the d/d.

I have some real tough SFC's and i will be reinforcing the floor abit, an Energy Suspension master kit, sloted & vented front and rear rotors, wonderbar, Hotchicks 1" lowerd springs and a custom 3 point strut tower brace.

I would run more stall. If it were me, Iwould be looking at closer to 3k.

Re: Plz help on parts list for 383 install.

ah ok, would a 3k stall be abit high for street use? this car will be 90-95% street and 5-10% strip.

I am going with the 3.25 rear to try and level out the loss of the "over drive" gear with the TH400, hopefully it will keep similar RPM to Speed ratio in top gear as my current 700R4 w/3.73 rear.

If the primary purpose is a track car (assuming 1/4 mile), go with more stall and gear. The stall makes a world of difference at the track, takes a little getting used to on the street, but that won't take long. Too little stall just makes the car a dog off the line.

I'm running 3500 stall and 3.73 gears in the '57. Granted, I don't drive it on the highway for long distances, but I do drive it to the track. With the 270 cam I used to have in it, it would complain a little cruising 65 mph at 3400 RPMs, but with the XS282, it just hums down the road.

Re: Plz help on parts list for 383 install.

so the GM-ZZ383, B&M TH400 W/ 2800<3000RPM Stall, Edelbrock RPM, 750CFM Demon and 9" W/3.25's would be a good combo?

What headers should I run with this engine?

Its going to have a custom dual 2.5" exhaust system.

Quoted
S/Steel w/extractors = $3,500.
S/Steel w/o extractors = $2,200.
Mild Steel w/extractors = $2,200.
Mild Steel w/o extractors = $1,400.

Re: Plz help on parts list for 383 install.

I may take some flack for saying this BUT, I think you really need to rethink your plans. Two Reasons:

#1 You are saying 85% street. If this is the case, you do not want a th400, you want an overdrive trans. This leads to #2

#2 Correcting a lack of overdrive by using higher gears is a bad idea, especially with a th400. The first gear ratio is going to leave you a lot to be desired on the bottom end, where all of your street driving fun will be occuring.

I would say get an overdrive trans, and some steeper gears. Get a great launch down low and still be able to cruise.

I agree that lower numerical rear gears is a poor substitute for overdrive. But, higher numerical gears for a parttime-strip car w/o OD is tolerable as well. Decide which is most important to you, strip performance or highway cruising - if you compromise strip for cruising, you'll be more frustrated (IMO) than compromising cruising for strip.

As for the carb, be aware of recent BG quality control problems. You may find yourself completely disassembling the carb to clean and deburr it. I think I'd go for a Proform, QFT, or Holley HP carb instead.

Ah ok thanks for the tip on the carb, i didn't know that.

as for the trans will a rebuild 700R4 take 425fwhp or will i need to have work done to it?
