i need serious help, first time working on the ta
ok so my problem started when i was driving to tampa, all of a sudden my rpms dropped from 2200 to about 500 and did it about 3 times and the engine cut off. the lights would dim everytime the rpm's fluctuated. i tried to start it back up and turned over fine but the rpm's immediately droped and the engine cut off again. the only way i could keep the engine going is if i would hit the gas but i would have to let off and hit the gas again repeatedly and even then it would only hit about 2000 rpm's and when i let off it would shut off once again. if i held the gas pedal i would get no reaction. i tried replacing the fuel filter and that didnt help. next i tried the TPS and that didnt help either. a few people suggested the ignition. i replaced the ignition module and a slight difference but still the same prob of jumping rpm's then the cut off. they also suggested the coil and/or computer, but before i go spend money on other parts (since i am on a budget) is there anyone that has had these same problems and knows the solution?

Well it may sound off beat but i think you should try checking the fuel pressure. Modern FI engines need a proper amount of fuel pressure to operate properly. I had a truck that acted stupid and i replaced everything under the sun. The cure was a new fuel pump, sounds funny but proper fuel pressure is critical, might be something you wanna check. Specs are available at auto-zone, pressure checkers are relatively cheap and can save you big $$ Good luck

I would have to go with red devil on this one. If you unplug the MAF and the car runs better, it is a failed MAF. This has happened to me once already. If the car doesn't run better with the MAF unplugged, plug it back in and then check fuel pressure and ignition timing. If timing is off, the car will die out and misfire going down the street. Fuel pressure will starve the car and it will die. I would think to look at the FPR before the pump. I had a ripped diaphram in my regulator and it pissed fuel all over and leaked under the gasket. I replaced it with a TPIS regulator and now it's alright.

Hey guys thanks, for the suggestions. No, i never did get a chance to try it with the MAF unplugged. I ran out of time for trying to diagnose the problem since this is my only transportation at the moment. I wound up taking it to a mechanic and they said it was most likely the fuel pump. I would looooove to do this on my own esp since $371 to replace a fuel pump really isn't in my budget, but without a lift or a shop to do it in i think the mechanic is my only option. I think it would be the fuel pump as well since the car would run completely fine when i dump fuel into the carburetor.
