Starter & Wires Question

89 TPI 305 T-5

I have taken my starter out for rebuilding/replacement.

With the 3 red wires, the purple wire, and the battery cable wire all disconnected...should I still be able to have power to the inside of the car if the cables at the actual battery are hooked back up??? Or do I need to jump the wires in someway to still have power to the car?

Also, will a starter from an 89 350 auto car work in the 305 5-Speed car??
I have them side by side, and its dark out, but the 350 starter appears a but different if not bigger.

The car gets power from the wire that connects to the big terminal on the starter solenoid with the battery cable.

Typical safety precautions dictate disconnecting at least one of the battery cables before messing with that.

Re: Starter & Wires Question

Right.... the red wires go on the same terminal of the starter as the big red batt cable; and that's how the rest of the car gets power.

Not a very good idea to try to scab that together somehow without the starter in there. That's a REAL good way to melt wires, start fires, etc.

There's no difference between a "350" starter and a "305" starter, as such. There is however, a difference between some auto starters but not all, and stick starters. The difference is the shape of the nose piece. A stick starter will work in an auto car, but not the other way around. They seem to have quit using 2 different ones at some point though, because some auto cars got the more "universal" starter.

Re: Starter & Wires Question

Just look at the nosecone of each starter. If they're the same, it'll work, if the "350" starter has a larger nose, it won't work with a manual trans. You can actually grind down the nosecone until it fits, I've seen guys do this, but as cheap as a replacement starter is, I'd recommend just getting the right one.
