Timing question
I have an '86 Camaro with a 305 4bbl carb. I guess its a CC Rochester Qjet since it has 2 or 3 different electrical plugs on it. There is no vacum advance on the distributer, so I guess its mechanical. Will all Camaros have a white/brown wire to disconnect in order to set the timing? I cant locate such a wire on the passenger side near firewall, then I read in a thread it may be on the drivers side. What indications will I get if I unplug the wire to let me know I have the correct wire unplugged?
Thank you

Re: Timing question
With the carb system, that's not how you do the timing....
You have to unplug the connection between the distributor and the outside world.
There are 2 harnesses coming out of the base of the distributor; the one that goes up to the cap with 3 wires in it, and one that hangs free and has about 4 or 5 wires in it, and a big flat Weatherpak type connector. It usually hangs down behind the dist, between the intake manifold and the trans tunnel. You have to unplug that one to set the timing to the factory spec.
With the engine off, unplug that. Start the engine up. It will run terrible and light the Check Engine light. Check and if necessary set the timing. Turn the car off, hook the plug back up, re-start the engine, and the light should go out.

Re: Timing question
Base timing ranges from 0 to 6 degrees BTDC. Set yours to what the sticker under the hood says, and go from there. Most people see slightly better throttle response with 4-6 degrees advanced.
