cleaning EGR port

Hello. Putting on a new EGR and was wondering what the best way is to clean the EGR port of carbon build up. I was told to just blast the port with some carb cleaner and grab a coat hanger and scrape inside the port, I am wondering if that can cause any harm with all that crap falling down into the motor. Or will it just burn off next time I fire it up. Any suggestions would be great.

Re: cleaning EGR port

To really properly clean it, you have to remove the intake (so you don't dump all the carbon into where it goes to), chip out anything large with a pick, screwdriver, or other long ferrous-based object with a point/blade on it, to knock out what you can. Then use brake cleaner to clean out the passage. Carb cleaner isn't as strong a chemical, and usually leaves behind an oily residue in everything. Brake cleaner is much stronger and it all goes away when it evaporates, won't leave anything behind. I would not recommend trying to remove the carbon without removing the intake first.

Re: cleaning EGR port

Thanks Adam, Never removed the intake before so thats all new to me. will check it out in the morning thanks for your input! The intake on my L03 shouldnt be too much of a pain to remove should it?

Re: cleaning EGR port

its not in too bad of a spot on the LO3. basically take the 2 bolts out and hope the come out first. then like you said take carb cleaner and clean the center port which should have a sping loaded circle in the middle which when youre done should be easy to push in with a screw driver or whatever. you can push it in and spray the cleaner in there let it sits a minute or 2 then dump it out and redo. youll see all the carbon coming out.

Re: cleaning EGR port

Intake R&R isn't hard on a SBC, it just takes some time to do. If its your first time doing it, it will probably take you the better part of a day to do. You'll need to remove the TBI unit, distributor, and valve covers to get the intake off - as well as misc hoses and wires too. Be sure to mark them so you know where they go (masking tape works well for that). Make sure you mark the location of the distributor rotor before you pull it out, so you can reinstall it in the same position. You'll need to buy a set of intake gaskets and probably valve cover gaskets too. You'll need a timing light afterwards as well to get the distributor set up correctly again - setting timing is pretty easy and straightforward.
