New owners engine question
New owners engine question
Hi, I have just purchased an 84 Z28 with an auto box and a 305 engine, it has Edlebrock exhaust manifolds that are blowing very bad on the drivers side, it is going in to a garage tomorrow for a new performance exhaust and for a full service, it will also have the manifold looked at
It has an Edlebrock Inlet with a 4 barrel carb, it also has gear drive on the auto box?
I am new to the US car scene and it is not that well supported with parts and advice in the UK, hence me joining here, I am a Toyota Supra MKIV owner who has longed for a Camaro as a 'weekend toy' for some time, I just would like to get some ideas for better performance etc, stuff I am sure you have all heard many times !

Re: New owners engine question
Took me a minute to understand what you were saying. Sounds like the exhaust manifold (header) is leaking exhaust on the passenger side. Need to have that fixed. Sounds bad too. And welcome.

1st welcome to the 3rdgen world. 2nd definately get the exhaust leak fixed, headers and a full aftermarket/custom exhaust is one of the first steps to better performance over stock.
3rd we'd be better able to point you in the right direction if we knew a little more about your car. Do you know what type of carburator is on the engine now? Do you know what sort of transmission is in it currently? What do you know about the history of the car?
Also, what would you like the car to do? These cars can be set up a bunch of different ways. Are you looking to drag race? autocross? aggressive street driving? touring? do you want a corner carver or a straight line brute, or a mix of both?

1st of all let me make things a little clearer than my first post, the car has gone to the workshop today and they are fixing the headers and exhaust problem, this should help the engine out somewhat, they have found a few other issues
Bent half-shaft at the rear giving a wheel wobble
Most of the engine pulley's are mis aligned, they think this was caused by the removal of the crank pulley and no spacer when it was re fitted and poor fitment of the power steering pump, they are sorting this
The car has an Edlebrock inlet and 4 barrel carb, dont know any more than that around fuelling at the moment
It has gear drive? auto transmission
Will focus on getting the car running well before I take any further steps on engine mods

ok bent half shaft, make sure they or you check other rear components for damage. Usually an axle shaft gets bent from hitting a curb or a large pothole and can tweak other parts.
gear drive? never heard of it, but then I dont know everything. Maybe a few pics and we might be able to identify your transmission. Be a help to know what you had, especially if you want to upgrade it

Re: New owners engine question
First off, welcome to TGO! Looks like you got a pretty sharp car from the pic you posted. One thing I wanted to point out though. Are you sure it's an 84? The reason I ask is the hood and the front nose on your car is the 85-90 style. Go to the section of this site that has pics of the 84 Z/28's and you'll see the difference. Just wondering if you got the year wrong or if a previous owner put a newer style hood and front nose on. Just noticed you also have the 85-90 style ground effects too. I'm betting your car is newer than 84.

Re: New owners engine question
Welcome to TGO. About that bent half shaft. this happened to me when my son went around a corner in the rain too fast. Easier to replace the whole rear end. If it does not have a posi, now is the time to do it. Secondly, your front grille looks like an RS grille, not a Z-28. you should check your vin and codes for all your original specs and options.
