1988 GTA Firebird

Hello! My fiance recently purcahsed a 1988 GTA. We cannot figure out why the engine keeps stalling. Everytime he come to a stop, he has to keep it in neutral and his foot on the pedal. What could be causing this and what is the price range that we are looking at to fix it?

Out on a limb here, but torque converter in the transmission possibly. I had to put my car in neutral because it jerked so bad when I came to a stop. Cost me $$$ to get my trans rebuilt. I'm not saying that's the problem, but it's something to look into.
