Recharge A/C with R12 Question

I was at my grandparents house today and got lucky enough to find a recharge kit with R12. My grandfather passed away 2 1/2 years ago so my grandmother said that I could have it. My grandfather put the reciept in the box...he bought the kit in 1980! My question is were do I attach the hose to recharge the system. I think it is the port that is attached to the evaporator (looks like an aluminum can). Does anyone know if this is correct? The A/C has worked marginally the last couple of years so I wanted to charge the system before I got into the hot Georgia summer!

Re: Recharge A/C with R12 Question

its the 1 with the blue cap on the aluminum can. you need a set of gauges to put it in tho, you dont want to over charge it. it will blow the seal in the compressor( not cheap) if you dont have gauges go to a shop and have them put it in carry freon with you, later jimmy

Re: Recharge A/C with R12 Question

That's providing you can find someone who still has R12 gauges or is willing to touch it. R12 has been outlawed for at least 10 years now. R134a has taken over and it's now being phased out also.

Re: Recharge A/C with R12 Question

When I turn on the A/C is blows air that is the same temp as if I was using the vent. I only have one can and I believe the system pressure is low since it blows luke warm air.

Re: Recharge A/C with R12 Question

Chances are if it needs a charge, there's a leak somewhere. Take it to a shop and have it checked out.
