What engine do I have ??

I bought this 92 fire bird from a lady, and she told me that its use to be a v8 then the guy blew it and swap in a v6, Now Im on a process of v8 swap , and this guy told me that my car is 2.8L and the tranny will not fix the v8 350, but I heard that if i have a 3.1L the tranny will fit the v8 350 right ? here the pix of the engine.

Re: What engine do I have ??

The eight digit of the vin will denote what engine was original.... i would check that first, cause i have never seen anyone go through the hassle of an engine swap to downgrade. If it is T then it was originally a 3.1. If i remember right, 2.8 and 3.1 are just about identical and have the same bellhousing as a 350. You should be able to tell just by looking. The transmissions are a different part number, and even if it fits, it may not handle the abuse and torque of a v8.

Re: What engine do I have ??

Check the 8th character in the VIN#, if it's a T, then the car was originally a 3.1L V-6 car(90-92 F-bodies). If it's an E,F, or 8, then the car was originally a V-8 car. That doesnt make sense to put a V-6 in after blowing up a V-8. It would be easier and a whole hell of alot cheaper to keep it a V-8. I think the car is probably a V-6 car. Also, neither a 2.8L nor 3.1L V-6 700R4/4L60 will bolt to a SBC. The only V-6 exception is the 4.3 V-6.

Re: What engine do I have ??

Yes, you'll need a V-8 specific 700R4 or at least a 700 from a 4.3L V-6. The 60* V-6 bell housing is different from the SBC's bell housing. You can swap out your F-Body specific tail shaft. The only V-8 700's you cant use are from 4x4s and Corvettes. I believe there is difference in the length of the output shafts.
