popping out tail pipe at idle??

Hi all. I have a built mini ram set up that I just got running recently and have been working the bugs out one by one. It's now running pretty well, however there is a small popping noise coming from the tailpipes at idle and sometimes at part throttle. Any ideas?

I have played with the timing a little and it seems like sometimes it gets worse, and sometimes better, but I have not been able to fully eliminate it. Also, not sure if it's fuel pressure related, but I have 30 pounders and they are set to 55 PSI with the vacuum source disconnected. I know there rated at 43.5, but it seems to run better at the higher pressure. Unfortunately I dont have access to a wideband gauge, and am low on money so a dyno is out of the question for the time being.

Ignition wires are all on the correct plugs. I am using a stock coil for now, and the dizzy is a cheaper aftermarket one. If theres any information you may need, let me know and I'll post it up. Thanks.

Assuming timing is correct, it sounds like it's running rich. Have you tried plugging the vacuum into the fuel pressure regulator? This should lower the pressure at idle/low RPM. I suspect that's whats causing a low rpm rich condition. Also, what injectors are you running? If you're using multecs, you should watch this video, towards the end he shows what a multec does under higher pressure:

Re: popping out tail pipe at idle??

I'm actually using ford 30lbs injectors. The vacuum is plugged back in, and the gauge sits around 38 PSI at an idle with the vacuum on. Not sure if my timing is dead on, but it's close to where I can give it some gas and rev it hard and it's very responsive, so I am guessing it's not the problem. I'll try lowering and playing with the fuel pressure though and see if that helps.

Re: popping out tail pipe at idle??

Ok, this car will not stop the popping and hesitating no matter where i adjust the timing or the fuel pressure. There is no check engine light on either. Is there a sensor that would cause this???? Anything else?

I have set the TPS at numerous voltages and it does not help either.

are you talking about a snapping sound from the exhaust around 1500-2000 rpms

Yes, it's actually right around those RPM's. Seems like playing with the timing and fuel pressure do not change it. I'm out of ideas.

Re: popping out tail pipe at idle??

So, word of advise for everyone.......DO NOT swap the two wires that plug into the ignition module under the cap on the small cap distributor!!! Your car will run, but it will run like crap and it will drive you crazy for weeks. I finally got to thinking and thought they MAY be swapped around since I put in a new module. Well, they were, and it was making part throttle almost impossible, but the car would idle decent. I swapped them back, and re-adjusted the timing, and the car runs BEAUTIFUL now! Thanks for the help guys, once again.
