AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
Man this car pisses me off sometimes! Had an intermittent problem where Id be driving around and then at low speeds (after turning corner or slowing down to turn) engine will cut off. Crank crank crank for 10-15 minutes, then it'll start right back up with no problem and get me home. All in the past 2 weeks.
Today this happened again at a gas station. Took longer than usual to restart. Then died at a light 5 min from my apt. Crank crank crank then "clunk" and now I can hear starter spin but not engage or crank at all.
$85 tow back home.
I bought a new fuel filter today but didnt have time to install this AM. Now I guess I have to replace the starter and try to figure out this stalling problem again.
Any clues?

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
i had the same problem....
i'll be driving and then everything would die....
i was able to restart it after 2 mins and continue on then die again..
this was driving it 7 hrs home to store it for the winter
i died half way home.. had to spend the night in a 24hr garage and have the ignition module replaced....
worked great... got it home
just had to replace again...
the garage didnt install it correctly.. a screw was loose.. so it didnt ground right and it failed..
got a new one.. and its running like a champ again...
maybe you can find a local place to check your ignition module for free to make sure its still good?

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
Cool man...thanks for the info.
I pulled the ign coil plug this am and it was all corroded.
Going to replace the starter this afternoon and check the ign coil when I get to the auto store. Going to replace the fuel filter too. All in a days work.
I hope it is the coil or filter or Im on the bus in the AM.
Wait a sec...they have 24 hr garages in london, ontario?

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
-- EDIT: accidentally put ignition coil when i meant to put ignition MODULE... editted to avoid confusion --
remember if you replace the ignition module to grease the bottom and make sure its screwed in tight too
i died outside of toronto actually... on my way back to ottawa for storage...
so they towed me an hour back into toronto...
and i got there just after the part store closed
so i spent the whole night in the shop...
part store closed at 730
i got there at 745...
so i spent 745pm-1030am in the garage with a dirty perverted old man that kept watching **** and "bumping" the table as i tried to sleep
it was wretched...
i had to go spend most the night in the car since they wouldnt work on it until the part store opened at 830am...
what an adventure that was... lol

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
Ahh sounds kind of like the time I got a 10 pm flight mixed up with a 10 am flight from London England and had to sleep on the bench all night in the airport next to someones smelly feet.
Makes for a good story though.
Ok got the fuel filter on, starter off, and ign coil off. Too the parts store as soon as ride gets here.
What grease do you use? Di-electric?

----------
i wouldnt use the white grease that comes with it, it gets crusty after time. di-electric greaze works good.

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
Don't use dielectric grease on your module. Use the stuff that comes with it or Heat Sink Compound or Thermal Conductive Paste or whatever it may be called.

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
if that doesnt work , next time try unplugging the MAF sensor then try starting it .if that works then it could be the MAF or the relay .

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
thanks for the tip but no MAF here.....SD with a MAP sensor. I dont think it'll even start with that unplugged.
Funny though last spring I went through 3 or 4 3rd gen starters, then I gave up and bought one for a 94-97 f-body. No problems until yesterday when the internal spring pooped out. During the exchange I found they sold me one designated for an unknown station wagon [of the LT type I presume]. It still worked better than the "large by huge" thirdgen starter.
No worries about the igntion coil deathklok; i appreciate your input. But I'll feel better when I get that $15 dollar check from you in the mail.
Ok got the module in hand.....fingers crossed. Will update with results.

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
The saga continues:
The good news: Got the module in smoothly. Buttoned the engine bay back up. Washed the car and went for a thirty minute cruise without any difficulty. Problem solved.
The bad news: On the way home, I smelled smoke and then my car died again. Saw white smoke. Smelled like a burnt wire. Also smelled like burnt paper. Tried to restart and all I got was "click click click click". Had power to everything but starter would not crank. I replaced it yesterday and think I must have burnt through a wire.
I dont understand though why the car died while driving, unless I burned the module. Ahhhh!

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
Update:
No wires burnt from the top area of the engine.
Batt checks at 12.1 volts.
Looked at the starter. The starter heat wrap was the nasty burning smell. Its a tad singed but smells exactly like what i smelled last night when it all went down.
Looks I tightened down the hot wires on the starter too close to the ground and there looks like there was some contact between the terminals.
Freed up the terminal connections so no contact; still loud starter clicking.
DAMN!!! I shorted out a brand new (well, reman) starter!
I guess you live and you learn. To Autozone, once again.

Re: AHHH! Dies intermittently while driving...now starter broke
keep the faith......get a dealership part if you have too. I've replaced 3 starters in three days and paid two tow trucks in two days.
Old cars are bitter-sweet.
I think the key, especially with a nearly 20yr old muscle car, is to have a daily driver so its not always so critical to get the work done.
New starter in hand.....God i'm tired of seeing my car on jack stands.
