hard start cold after warmup then won't idle

40 chev with 305 TPI 90-92 1227730 ecm
takes about 3 min to start cold, just tap it and tap it (starter) dont just grind on starter, fuel pressure 40lb getting spark. doing a pressure check the pressure does not bleed down, 5-10 min later still have 36-40 lbs.
after starting it seems to run fine, but after warm up it will not idle, dies at every stop or when you let your foot off of the gas.

new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, module o2 sensor, changed MAP sensor.
no codes
I have tried 2 different O2 sensors one heated and one not heated, the next thing I will try will be the cts, although the scanner shows it to be ok.
do you think a bent dist shaft would cause this, I took the engine from a totaled 87 iroc, hit hard in front.
I cut the front end off and pulled eng & trans together and put in my 40, there was no front end on 40 at the time.
one of my sons camaros would die at stop signs and it turned out to be a bent dist shaft.
long question but I wanted to include as much information as possible.40chevguy
may take a couple hours to respond, have to go get 40 from alignment shop.

Re: hard start cold after warmup then won't idle

I think I checked tps way back when i installed engine, but I know I haven't done the iac, but I will check tommorow, I have an OTC scan tool, so it wont be to much problem. this engine has been in this car for 8 years, it has been started only occasonially, I have always put fuel stablizer and fuel injection cleaner in it, it has always had the stalling problem, but has just started the hard start problem, I thought it might be a timming problem, but cant see the timming marks on front of engine to ceck it, I can read total timming on the scan tool, it reads 32 total, but you have to add base timming to that to get the total, so I still dont know if timming is correct, the engine seems to run smooth and strong when driving, it does smell rich at times.

Thanks Jimmy the iac was the problem for the dieing, the tps was fine .58-4.xx wot.
I'm thinking the hard start is bad fuel, i'll put a few more miles on it, then fill it up with fresh $4 gallon gas.

Re: hard start cold after warmup then won't idle

I had same problem, turned out the injectors were bad. I checked the coils in the injectors with an OHM meter and 6 out of 8 where way out of specs. Seemed like the heat/cold would alter how the injectors behaved. I, like you checked everything.......until I came across the injectors...just a thought.

Re: hard start cold after warmup then won't idle

Thanks for the reply Chrisy, but it turned out to be the bad fuel, strange that after you got it started that first time when cold, then it would start just fine the rest of the day, but now it starts great even when cold, (just the fuel).
I also ran 2 tanks with fuel injector cleaner in it, and was getting 18 mpg, 2 tanks after the cleaner treatment I got 25 mpg, this was all hwy driving.
I went to an NSRA event in Springfield last weekend, put over 400 miles on it, with no problems.
thanks 40 guy
