Timing cover

My T/A is leaking oil pretty bad (spraying out on hard accel.) I think maybe there moght be a pin hole or somthing in the timming cover or the seal is blown out (wet with oil around this area) The block is a 79 or 80 350 block now do I need to drop the front of the oil pan for this style or can I leave it in tact? also how can I stop the crank pully from turning while trying to get the bolts out of the crank pully?

Re: Timming cover

if you have an air compressor the air gun will take those bolts off no problem or you can put a large screw driver through the flywheel to prevent the motor from turning.

Re: Timming cover

I do have a compressor so I guess I do that. What about the timming cover? Do I have to drop the pan or not? My block is from around 79-80 and I don't think I need to drop it on that old of one but I can't remember...anyone know?

Re: Timing cover

No, you do not need to drop the pan.

Pull the balancer etc, take the bolts off the cover and and pull the top of the cover forward.

It will come off.

replace your seal etc.

Before reinstalling...

Cut the "ears" back on the timing cover that hold the pan gasket. Do this a little at a time until you can snake the cover back into place. When you are confident that you can snake it back in, clean everything and add some black rtv around the cover and bolt it into place. Then with you finger smear black rtv between the where th pan and the cover meet.
