What are these for???

when i was changing my EGR valve this weekend i have always wondered what these 2 big hex bolts where for on the front of the intake manifold. Are these used to increase or decrease airflow through the manifold or what? im not sure so im going out on a ledge.

Probably for other applications, since that intake came on many cars and trucks, and possibly even marine applications.
