89 wont start..help!
89 wont start..help!
Hey guys. So, I'm about to buy my second third gen! But, this one's gonna be a project. The thing is, I don't know why it isn't starting. The kid I'm buying from told me that he was driving it, and he heard a clicking coming from the gearbox. He was going up a hill, and he heard a loud clunk, like something fell off the car (nothing actually did). He said the engine died, along with the power steering and brakes. He is dead set, that the sound was coming from the gearbox. Any ideas? I haven't gone to look at the car yet, this is a kid that I've known for a long time...and I've seen it multiple times in the past. I should tell you that it is an 89 IROC, 305 TPI. New alternator, and fairly new transmission. Any help would really be appreciated. I'm using this car as one I'm gonna learn on, so I figure, this is a good starting point..
Thanks in advance guys. =)

maybe starter fell, probably wasnt tighened all the way when the trans was replaced. whats the no start symptoms? just clicks? any lights on? or turns over but wont start?
Re: 89 wont start..help!
As far as I know, the lights turn on. But, like I said, I didn't crank it when I was there yesterday. From what this kid told me, when you turn the key, there's nothing. When I had my third gen last year, it was the starter. But this doesn't sound like the same symptoms. I need to check the fluids too... I don't know if there is any metal in there or whatever. And this kid knows nothing about cars. So, that doesn't really help the situation at all...

auto or 5speed? to check for metal you will have to drain the oil, just checking the dipstick wont help. i would get under there and check it out. look for any visual signs, areas of fluid leak, etc. then check if it clicks, he might say nothing but since he dont know jack about cars it could be just clicking, hense a bad starter or possibly locked up motor. get a mechanic to look it over before you buy it.

Its a 5spd. I can def. check the oil pan next time I go.. I'm buying it for $50 hah, so I think this would be a fun project to work on... But the last time I went to see it, it was raining, and gross out, so I didn't really want to get too involved with it that day. I'm heading over there again on Sunday, so, I'll see what I can find. Thanks for the ideas.
