dropping the fuel tank.

I have a bad feeling about my fuel tank. I suspect that once I get my hands on a gauge it will prove to be the poblem. Myquestion is: can I drop the tank without pulling the exhaust? My existing exhaust is pretty well rusted together but it works. New exhaust is not in the budget. What will I need to do in order to pull this off?

Thx

Exhaust you "may" be able to get away with just loosening it up and moving it out of the way. The service manual calls for complete removal of the rear axle in order to drop the fuel tank. Some have just loosened the control arms and undone the shocks to drop the rear as far as possible without completely removing it. When I did mine the rear end and exhaust were both out. Made things nice and easy to drop out.

Re: dropping the fuel tank.

Cut your exhaust and then use a band clamp to put it back together.
I didn't remove the rear axle but I did have to remove the panhard bar and track bar in order to remove the tank.
Of course what can go wrong did go wrong. I ended up having to replace both. I had to cut the mounting bolts off since they were rusted solid in the bushings.

Re: dropping the fuel tank.

Well I am once again at square 0!!! I just got my hands on a fuel pressure gauge. Keep in mind I am generally soft on the accelerator. normal driving I stayed around 39 PSI. flooring it I came in to the high 40s (maybe 50 but I had to watch the road.) low point was about 36. after I turned it off I had 40 PSI and 20 minutes later I still have 40 PSI.

I really hoped that a fuel pump would solve my problem. Ugh!

Re: dropping the fuel tank.

ok, help us help you. it sounds like the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator are working. the injectors aren't leaking.

what are the symptoms?

Re: dropping the fuel tank.

Jeff Thanks for the offer ... I feel like The search function is my second home, unfortunately there are lots of thought but people rarely come back an post once they solve the problem.

I got the car recently. when I got it I ws kicking codes 33, 34 and 44 and the engine would buck under light acceleration at +/-2000 RPMs. I replaced the MAF (filament was broken) I also did the TPS and MAF relays for good measure. Now I have a 33 and 36 and the car intermittently stalls or the engine will continue to run but but not register anything on the TACH (digital dash) and have no power.

I know the car has a new computer (instaled by pontiac less than a year ago) as well as anything eles it needed (previous owner was a friend who had it serviced at the stealership.)

My next thought is grounds, Where do I look for this? Any thoughts are appreciated.
