Swapping to Serpentine -- Need help with Smog Stuff

Hey guys,

I'm going to be installing a serpentine belt set up into my 84 T/A. I want to keep the smog equipment. I would like to reuse my original diverter valve and other smog equipment that the A.I.R. tubes run to and was wondering if anyone who has done this swap knows if my original brackets (From the V-Belt) will work or will I have to get a setup from a serpentine car? Thanks!

I have no real experience, but it would appear that the air pump may bolt-up to the serpentine bracket.

Maybe something in the following link will prove useful:

Thanks James I appreciate it. That should help out alot!! The kit I picked up off ebay for $165.00 plus $40.00 for shipping says it has all the brackets and bolts, AC Compressor, Power steering pump, Alternator and smog pump. All I should need to buy is a water pump. So hopefully I won't have to re-use mine but if I do, maybe the pulley will just swap over. I'm more curious about the rest of the AIR stuff that bolts to the old brackets on the passenger side where all the hoses converge. That's the spot that is going to give me the most problems I think.

Can't say without seeing your eBay set-up, but most serpentine set-ups run the water pump from the back side of the belt, meaning it's turning in the opposite direction from stock. If that is the case with yours, you can't use your stock pump because it won't turn in the proper direction.

Beat me to it, Kid. You'll also need a few misc pieces, but I think the link second link will provide what you need.

Bah, ya got me. Alternator is on the drivers side, AC on the passenger side. Looks like all the other setups off the 88-92 cars so I should need a "reverse rotation" pump right? I hope that's the case anyway. Still waiting for a response from the seller, he only calls it a setup for an 82-92 camaro/firebird.

I didn't understand that you were buying a factory system - there are a lot of businesses selling stuff on eBay.

You will certainly need a serpentine water pump. It would probably be easiest if you picked up the A.I.R. stuff off of a TBI car, but I'm not sure what all connectors changed.

I do know that air conditioner and alternator electrical connectors changed between '84 and the serpentine years. You're biting off more than just the nuts & bolts.

I've been doing some searches here as for what's needed to update to a newer alternator with the different plug but it would really help if I had a diagram. haha All in all, other than the smog stuff and buying the new alternator, it seems fairly strait forward.

And I'm an idiot. Thanks James. Anyone else out there know if the diverter valve brackets match up? If not, I'm going to have to go digging for the set up and see if I can get one or not.

Re: Swapping to Serpentine -- Need help with Smog Stuff

I have done this conversion to my 82. You will need a 88-92 ac hose off the AC compressor to make the change over. I can't say anything about the smog pump because my car does not require a smog pump due to a CARB BAR sticker exemption.
