Scary backfire at 5K, is my diag. correct?
So I was driving home from work and decided to get on it on the on ramp to the highway. top of 2nd gear at 5200 -- BANG!
So immediately I think "S#!T - there goes the motor"
Thinking I dropped a valve I coasted for a few seconds and watched the rear view for smoke. None came and I gave it a little more gas and kept going.
The Tach stumbled up and down along with engine bucking but long story short, I managed to get it home and the bucking and tach got better. No noises or other symptoms.
So I checked on my old friend thirdgen.org for some similar situations and came up with bad coil or module in the HEI. Luckily I had all those parts and went and swapped them out.
Fired up that night and drove around today and no symptoms at all.
What do yall think? Did I get the diagnosis right or is it going to crap out on me soon?
Car is 88 TPI with remote mount coil. Rest of info in sig.

I think you're correct, and the module could have been the problem. The car prob loaded up with fuel for a split sec at high rpm and caused the bang. Espeically with the Tach acting up, unless the pickup in the distributor is going out.
