Question about distributor cap position.

My brother got a Formula with a 88 TPI irocz motor in it. WE changed the plugs because the car ran rough. I wasnt paying attention so i just took all the wires and plugs out. When i went to put them in like i do on the other 2 bird i have in my driveway it wouldnt start at all. They where all in the right positions so i decided to move each wire one spot counter clockwize on the cap and it started but runs rough still.

So in stead of the number 1 plug being nere 6 oclock its more around 3. And smoke comes out when we hit the gass it sputters sometimes. So im trying to figure out if the distributor being so far turned off would it cause it to run that rough. And how would i fix it. Its the first tpi car ive messed with and i couldnt talk the the guy that did the swap. So i know nothing about the motor and was shocked by the distributor. That was the frist time ive seen one turned that far on a fule injected car. And thank you ahead of time

Easiest way to get it close.... Pull the #1 spark plug and turn the crank with a 1/2 socket til on the compression stroke.... put the balancer mark on zero and see which terminal on the cap the rotor lines up with and that should be your #1 wire.

Thank you That will help me out alot in not use to the tpi motor and this one is a swap so only god knows what the guy did with it.
