Idle Problems

I have an 88 IROCZ 5.7L TPI. I was at the track a few weeks ago trying out some new tires that ended up being horrible tires. I could not get traction. The last pass I took I was feathering the crap out of it trying to get it to hook up but it would not hook. I went to park and wait on a friend and turned off the car. Once I started it again it lugged really hard and eventually shut off. It will not idle it just luggs coughs and dies. Once I get it rolling though it runs fine at speed. I had a mechanic tell me that it was probably my idle air flow valve. I replaced it today and it still will not idle. I don't think it is the mass air flow sensor, I put a new one on it last year, i am going to check it tomorrow though. Any one have any idea of what else it could be?
