Re: 86 z, how much is it worth?

selling a moderately to heavily modified car is always alot harder than a near stock car.

i am going to play devils advocate as a buyer.

first off, i have little to no faith in other people's work (nothing against you personally, just in general), so if i were considering it i would look for receipts, or if the person who did the work worked at a shop or was ASE i would dismiss that.

as far as the milage goes, there is really no way to confirm that on a car that the engine has been swapped how many miles were on the engine, so that could work against you.

the one advantage is that it is a newer motor (as far as technology), but the disadvantage is that it is not an LS1.

so... if the car was in good condition and had a clean carfax, and i were able to do a compression test, have a good look at everything and possibly even do a leakdown test, depending on the results i would say $3000 - $5000.

just remember that you will VERY RARELY (not to say never) get out of the car what you put into it as far as money goes.

Re: 86 z, how much is it worth?

thank both of you for your responses, i was thinking a similar price range myself. also im no ase certified mechanic but i have faith in my work and was even considering keeping it becuase of how nice the car is. i have some1 who wants to buy it and its a friend so i wanted to give him a good price. your input was helpful on my decision, o and i like the comment on it not being an LS1 , if it were i would definitly be keeping it lol but i came across the LT1 for dirt so i went with it.

Re: 86 z, how much is it worth?

just start high and then youll have room to bargain. and as far as being ASE certified and all that, ok thats fine but a complete dum@ss cam pick up a chiltons and follow the recipe step by step so it shouldnt be that bad.
then again you never know if someone has their own ideas, maybe they dont even really care much about the engine, maybe they want to go BB instead or want this cat back instead of that one.

"" but a complete dum@ss cam pick up a chiltons and follow the recipe step by step ""

i beg to differ. yes "a complete dumb-ss can pick up a chilton" and maybe follow the steps. just because he is following the steps doesnt make what he does work right. they can follow the steps, but if they dont understand simple important concepts (torqueing bolts to spec in proper sequence, misuse of various chemicals/additives/assembly lubricants) and carelessness and ignorance, thats when they mess up. my uncle has a motorcycle shop and he says "tinkerers are his best customers."

the thirdgens that i have bought i have bought cheap with the intentions of fixing numerous bugs and issues, but that is not a big deal since i have always had a reliable primary car, so if it didnt start i could take that. i also have the tools and knowledge to do such things.

if i were to buy a new primary car without another reliable source of transportation, that is when i look for receipts (if there is any major work done... major work to me is defined as beyond basic boltons or normal "wear" parts) or certifications and thoroughly check out the car.

fbirdroller - i wasnt mistrusting your work in any way, i was just playing the "skeptical buyer role."

good luck on the sale though.
