timing / distributor question

i had a few beers last night while pulling my distributor and forgot to mark it .
can i just line up the mark on the balancer pulley with zero on the timing tab and set the rotor to the #1 spark plug wire and put it back in ? or is it more complicated than that ?

i have a 88 350 tpi .

Re: timing / distributor question

As far as I know, you should be able to get #1 at TDC and then point the distributor at #1. This should be close but will require some tweaking.

Best of luck!

Re: timing / distributor question

the best thing i could think of you can do is to put it top dead center then line up rotor with #1

remove #1 spark plug, turn engine over with finger over #1 spark plug hole, turn until you feel compression build, keep turning until you line balancer up with 0 mark, reinstall dist so that rotor is pointing to #1.

Re: timing / distributor question

Exactly. Doing it this way prevents you from putting the distributor on the exhaust stroke. i.e. "180 out"

Just for ease though I loosen the spark plug and listen for the hiss as the air escapes on compression build.
