rookie starter question
rookie starter question
I had a problem with my car not starting. I replaced the battery and had the starter tested and it was good. So I put the starter back in and hooked up the negitive cable to the battery. as soon as I touched the positive cable to the positive terminal.... the car wanted to start!! I hooked something up wrong and I don't know what.

Re: rookie starter question
You didnt put one of the positive battery cables on the small stud of the solenoid did you? If you have full time current to the the small stud on the starter then i believe that would cause what you are describing.

Re: rookie starter question
If your cables are set up like mine, where the positive cable has a big black wire and a smaller red one, the big black wire goes to the big stud on the starter, and the smaller one needs to hook into the charging system.
Now, im not sure how they did that in the factory, and i cant look cause i no longer have my motor, but you could try and take the small red one and put it on the stud of the alternator. i think thats how it may have been stock. try and start your car and test the alternator with a meter to see how much it charges at. should be around 12v i think.
hope this helps

Re: rookie starter question
actually I have the red (positive) cable that goes to the large stud on the starter, and from that cable there is a red 10 gauge wire that I think goes to a "tower" looking device with four other wires together. The black (negitive) cable is grounded the the body of the car, and has a 10 gauge tail that is also bolted (grounded) to the frame. When I took the starter out to have it tested, the positive cable was on the big stud along with two other smaller wires. and I think there was one wire that went to the other smaller stud on the starter.Somewhere I messed up and now I don't know where to start!!

Well the other wire going to the smaller stud on the starter is probably purple, and that is your ignition switch wire. There should be the big battery cable on the big stud of the alternator, and those other two wires you speak of are probably your power distribution wires, are they both on one eyelet?
The big thing you have to be sure of here is that you do not have full time 12 volt supply to both studs of the starter. The only wire that should be on the smaller stud should be the purple wire. Find out whre those other four wires go that are on that tower thing and i will better be able to help.
