What starter do i need?

Hi Guys / Girls,
I bought this car with a lot of parts not installed.
With it, came 2 diffrend starters: One with 2 long bolts and one with 1 long and 1 shorter bolt.
They are both not working so i am going to buy a new one.
I dont want to damage the cogwheel that is on the engine, so my question is:
What starter do i buy for my 305 ci engine?
Regards, Cleotiz

Re: What starter do i need?

The starter with two long bolts, has the mounting holes at an angle to the starter face/house, and is for a 168 tooth flywheel.

The long/short bolt starter, has the mounting hole perpendicular to the starter which is parallel to the face. This is for a 153 tooth flywheel, which is what your 305 has.

To confirm, you can look at the starter mounting pad on the block, and see the holes. Hold the start up into position, and the "wrong" one should not even fit against the flywheel.

Take a look at the picture here.

Re: What starter do i need?

For the 153T recommend the starter for a 93-96 LT1, it's a much better and lighter design than the stock starter for a 82-92

Thanks for the help!
Would you by any chance also know which Delco number for the one that will fire up my 305? :P

Thanks! Cleotiz

Maybe there's a reason they're just laying around? I mean other than they're probably wore out starters that were inferior to begin with...

Re: What starter do i need?

if it's the stock ring gear on the flywheel, then you need the one with the straight across bolts with one shorter than the other..

if it's got the bigger ring gear, then you need the one with the 2 long bolts that are offset from each other..
