Rear Gear Swap Questions

I have a 1986 Camaro LG4 5 speed with the stock base rear end. It has a set of open 3.27s right now.
What are these rear gears 8 bolt 27 spline 7.75in?

I have a set of GM 3.73s, 10 bolt, 27 spline, 7.5in, with posi carrier. I believe they came out of an 88-91 camaro or firebird.
Are these gears going to fit in the stock 86 rear end?

And the 10 bolts are stronger than the stock 8 bolts or w/e right?

The 3.27's are found in the 9 bolt rear end (number of bolts that hold the cover on).
They are made by a completely different manufacturer than the 10 bolt (ie: nothing inside will swap).
Count the bolts that hold the cover on your stock rear end and report back.
The higher gears for the 9-bolt rears are 3.70s.

Wooh its a 10 bolt.

The guy that i bought the gears from did call them 3.70s. I just thought that meant 3.73s.

Re: Rear Gear Swap Questions

The 10-bolt equal woulda been 3.23. Maybe that's what you have?

Check your cover bolts...9 or 10 bolts & NOTHING swaps inside.

Re: Rear Gear Swap Questions

yeah its a 10 bolt cover.

And yes 3.23s not 3.27s. I thought last time i checked the drivetrain list it said 3.27s. Oops.

Nothing Swaps inside a 10 bolt???

Re: Rear Gear Swap Questions

Depends on the years gears you have & the year axles you have.

I'm not 100% positive on 10-bolt years, but the spline count might have changed. I *THINK* they never changed, like the 9-bolts did, but I can't say FOR SURE.

Any 10-bolt guru's out there?

i don't think they changed either. As far as my research seems to show. It would be great if there were someone out there who could varify.

Re: Rear Gear Swap Questions

I remember reading somewhere on here that 10 bolts had 26 spline axles until a certain year, @86-88 I think, after, they went to 28 spline axles. I just can't remember exactly what year.

EDIT: Here it is:https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/faq-...ml#post3801229

See? I know the 9-bolts had changed the splines, but didn't know if the 10-bolts had.

Re: Rear Gear Swap Questions

go stephen haha. Yeah so i just counted the splines in the diff, about 5 times cause it was kinda difficult. Sorta dark and lots of little bumps, and i'm not good at numbers after 10..... But my carrier is a 26 spline. And my car is a 26 spline. So im happy. Is there supposed to be a little space in the splines. I think so, just making sure?

Re: Rear Gear Swap Questions

88 GM went to 28 spline ... but some of the 26s hung around into 89 or so I've heard. I bet counting those splines was a pain.
