another cam suggestion plz
I purchased this motor for 5500: http://paceperformance.com/index.asp...&ProdID=228282 and after reading archived threads on the zz383 the consensus is that the cam in it is just ok. Before I install her into my iroc I was thinking about doin a swap now instead of 3 months from now when its all in and I have drivin it and decide I want more. I plan on making a good street/track car. I have a 4th gen rear with 3:42's, mostly spoon suspension pcs and their frame ties. The specs on the came seem tame to me compared to some of the other members on here. I have a 700r4, have not picked the converter out yet (thinking 3500). Unless I am way off? plz any input would be great.

I'd say that's a good street/strip cam. I had a 246/254 dur @ .050 .558/.558 cam that was too much as far as it made little vacuum for the brakes. Those heads would probably rather have a cam that lifts .550-.600, but the duration starts too get a little much for the street at those lifts. Honestly, I'd say that you probably could get .5sec better time in the 1/4-mile pretty easily from a bigger cam, but I'm talking something like 250/255 dur @.050 and .600+ lift that you wouldn't like to try and tune or drive much.

Thanks for the input. I have read more here on this forum and it seems that most feel the motor is just an ok setup. I (like everyone else) want only the best, but can only afford so much. A quick cam swap was wishfull thinking, and cheap. The price seemed good for a motor I can drop in now. No piecing together, no assembling. Just plug, tune and play. A power adder is looking better and better, but it will just have to wait till summer. Need to figure out my stall. And build the tranny.

I'm thinking either a 3000 or 3500 stall, and be sure it is a lock-up converter so it'll be no different once above 40mph or so. The book I have here calls that cam "high perf. street machines, 2000+ stall, gears, choppy idle." For the 2-3 tenths a cam might be worth, I'd wait until you get it dialed in first and then decide on power adder or not as that changes optimal cam numbers.
