Guys help me please. Got some questions
I just bought a 1983 Z28 Camaro a half an hour ago for 500 bucks. It was a good deal so i took it. Of course it had some problems so id like to ask them for all you camaro experts out there.
1. I know the clutch is bad and the guy has told me so but its almost impossible to get it into first gear.. But once it goes into gear.. The clutch works ok.. I need to get a new clutch but id like to make it a tad bit easier to get into 1st so it can be drivable to the shop. What can i do? Dont want to tow. The guy i bought it from got it into first with ease but we cant seem to find that secret.
2. The car starts fine and idles fine but once we turn it off.. it wont start until we jump it.. Ill take a guess here and say its the battery?
3. The guy told me it needs a new valve cover gasket because it smokes out of the area and has a bit of leaking oil. What exactly should i buy to replace this?
4. The exhaust leaks out alot of smoke.. Sometimes its dark smoke.. The guy took off the smog belt.. I have the smog belt and everything ready to be put on.. Would that solve the exhuast problem? I think he said something about the exhuast manifold or something but i kinda forgot.. What is causing all the smoke?
Ill think of some new questions as i go check out the engine. Help out a new camaro owner here.

Starter turns over motor, battery powers the starter...sounds like low amperage, will it hold a charge after running a while? Volt meter will tell you the voltage, you need 12-14

He hasn't used the car in 3 months.. when he started it.. a good amount of smoke poured out..Only time darker smoke comes out is when i rev it kinda hard.. So i thought it was running just alittle rich.
While the motor is running.. It lets out smoke around the valve cover area.. He told me it just needs new cover gaskets and it should stop.
I dont think it can be a head gasket issue (assuming thats what youre talking about) since he claimed the engine was rebuilt recently.

Ill wait until its cleaned up alittle since its pretty dirty right now. :P

im not an expert....but maybe just start in 2nd, at least to the shop?

On the smoke problem.. I noticed after about 25 mins of driving.. The smoke didn't come out that much.. Is that a sign of burning unused fuel or something?

I went out and started it up.. It smoked alittle for about 2-3 mins then was fine afterwards. Even when i rev it.. Not too much smoke comes out. So i think its just burning out old fuel and oil.
Also.. When i checked the oil stick.. I discovered that it was bone dry.. I mean.. Like not even a small dab of oil on the stick.. When i did get alittle oil on the stick.. The oil was black.. So i went to the store and bought 2 quarts of oil.. put one in and it seemed to run alittle bit better.. Doesnt even smoke out of the engine no more.

Always a good idea to check all fluids, filters, brakes and battery when getting a vehicle new to you...just in case it is bone dry!
Sounds like you got a project vehicle...the best kind
Pull the Vin # and find the markings to see what you got and check them against the info on this site.

I just put in 1 for now to see if it leaks out on the driveway at all.. If not then itll be loaded with the proper amount.

Last night it was stalling and dying out.. I did alittle bit of work today and it fires up pretty nicely.. Had it running for 10 mins and no smoke coming out of the valve cover like it was doing yesterday and the exhaust isnt pouring out smoke as much..
I was thinking about running some sea foam in it.. Think that would help clear out all the unused oil and fuel from it sitting for 3 months?

Yea...some fuel stabilizer would probably be good also incase any water or condensation got into the gas tank while sitting.
Check out this site...lots of good info and you can enter the Vin...just click on Decoding in the middle of the page...its free, won't give you the carfax info, but other good stuff about the car, like engine type and stuff so you can verify if it has the original engine and such.

On the valve cover, I contact cemented my cork gasket to the cover and then just snug up the bolts and can take them off as often as needed without having to replace gaskets and no sealant on the head side...never had a leak in all these years either.
You might try to recondition the battery first with a charger. Could save you replacement, but if it has been sitting a while, it maybe shot.

Started it up again and the valve covers both have smoke blowing out of them again.. So i think the cover gaskets are shot. The exhaust is still doing ok.
