Whats the difference in these 2 engines?

92 chevy 2wd truck 305 roller vs 88 pontiac firebird 305 roller? whats different as far as internals? the reason i ask is... wont the firebird ecm have problems if the truck engine is installed and the truck engine has different cam/ hence didnt the trucks come factory with rv cams? i know there wasnt much else different but i think the trucks camshafts had a different duration and timing advance curve was somehow differently mapped in truck ecm right?

Most likely the truck isn't roller.

Re: Whats the difference in these 2 engines?

I have the engine from the truck sitting in the garage with the intake off. I couldnt believe it either. But low and behold, roller lifters, rockers (looks to be aftermarket rockers) cam is stock GM cam. wish I knew where to get a grind number. that would be telltale sign. This engine ran VERY strong in the truck when it was removed. The guy that gave it to me replaced it with a blown 383. but, if i replaced the worn out block in the firebird with this one.... would i then run into problems with the computer...? i know a 305 truck computer wouldnt work in the car, so why would a 305 engine work in the car, i cant see the difference.... other than maybe the cam, and aforesaid... maybe even the throttle body.. but their cant be much else. right?

I'd guess it wasn't the factory engine in the truck, then.

Most likely it will run just fine with the f-body ECM unless the cam has been changed out for something with a lot of overlap.

Re: Whats the difference in these 2 engines?

good deal. it looks like a good engine. very clean internally. no sludge. no play in the mains or rods. no play (as far as i can tell) in the wristpins. great compression before i pulled the heads for an inspection. piston tops look awesome. flat top. didnt think GM produced engines with flat tops, but... compression was well into 155# steady. into the exhaust manifolds, barely any carbon to speak of, as well as in the intake manifold, near and around the egr. I called the guy a few mminutes ago asking where he bout the motor he said from GM performance and even has the original receipts. $2600 for a 305 sounded kinda high to me but i guess its par for the course huh. it came with records as well, so ill post more as soon as i get the details in the paperwork. i want to keep the car as stock looking as possible but im so tired of getting my **** kicked by these damn kids driving these hundred dollar ricers with $20 intakes and bumblebee mufflers. all i can say is.. i miss my '70.
