my 84 T/A with rebuilt 305 and automatic transmission. It makes a metal clanking sound when I first start it then stops. A few times it was doing it while sitting still but hasn't today. It still does it every time I start the car. The starter is about two months. I thought maybe that was it but checked clearance and it's fine. The noise starts right after the pinion has gone back in. It doesn't do it while the pinion is engaging or starting to leave the flywheel. The noise seems to be coming from around the flywheel area but I don't see anything that looks like it's a problem. everything seems tight and the flywheel looks o.k. here's my clip from under the car. the light is glaring so that's what the streak is going all the way up. check all , repeat all bolts from torque converter to flywheel/flexplate . sounds like a couple have backed out . take this time to remove one at a time , clean , with acetone/ brake cleaner . locktite & torque . do them all at this time . a pretty easy fix . just takes time & labor . good luck .

 

is it easy to get to these from under the car on ramps? thanks for the info.

 

not to bad , put on ramps , remove cover , check bolts . do what you need , close back up . remember check all bolts and lock-tite .

I have a 90 Camaro RS and the engine was swapped before i bought it to a 350 from an 85 pick-up. She makes the same noise around the flywheel when you start her up and even when she idles. I've noticed lately that when I drive her around she continues to make the noise. Have you figured out what the problem was yet? If so let me know so maybe I can check and see if I can resolve mine

 

I'm going to check my bolts around the flywheel and converter today and let you know if that helps. It just started recently but has gotten worse.

No luck. There are bolts on the inner side of the flywheel I can't get to. I got to three on the outside of the flywheel but that's it. The noise is now going all the time down the road and it's loud. It sounds like some piece of metal flapping on something around the flywheel but I see nothing.Kind of like plastic that you'd put on your spokes on your bike as a kid.I checked again and the sound is coming from around the flywheel and torque converter

 

problem solved. it turns out that something had slipped out of alignment with the starter and I just couldn't tell since the car wasn't high enough. cost me $60. I now wish I had just tried to jack the car up even higher to see it better. oh well, noise gone. the shim moved but I couldn't see it
