Alright seriously..... (valve covers)

This is pissing me off now. lol.

I've bought 3 sets of cover gaskets (cheap cork ones.. all they had) and a new set of covers.. since both of the covers were smoking and leaking.. so i replaced the gaskets 1 time with the old covers.. Put everything back together.. I go start the car and the driver side one was pouring out smoke.. i was like cool.. So i took the driver side cover off and the gasket slipped over and inverted.. So i go back to the store.. by another set of gaskets..one needed 1 so i put the other way.. I put the new gasket on the driver side and then again.. its smoking again. Passenger 1 was fine. So i went up and bought new covers.. and another set of gaskets.. I put them on.. Passenger one didnt fit too well.. had to do some small customizing to it.. got them both on and what do you know.. BOTH are smoking now.

Seriously.. are these THAT hard to put on and not have them smoke? LMK

Re: Alright seriously..... (valve covers)

If you are sure that all of the old material was scraped off and that the new gaskets fit well and are flush with the head and the surface of the valve cover I guess it could be a bad pcv valve or clogged breather not evacuating the crank case pressure. I would double check the surfaces again and maybe use some permatex to attach the gasket at the valve cover and re-install it being carefull to notice any restriction when installing it,maybe check the valve cover bottom surface on a flat table to see if it is in fact flat. It wouldnt be the first time I have seen new valve covers that were indeed warped. good luck

I just slapped in a new PCV valve so im sure it aint that.. I'm going to go buy some rubber gaskets this time.. No more cork. I'll make triple sure i coat the entire gasket with silcone.. If it happens again.. Imma be pisssssed. lol. I might go pick up another set of valve covers as well.

You didn't by chance warp the valve cover itself? Sometimes the new flimsy ones will do that if you don't tighten them evenly.

Re: Alright seriously..... (valve covers)

The rubber gaskets without rtv, amd make sure everything is very clean. Don't overtighten the bolts either, or it will warp like zacharyhorn said. That should last for years.

So you guys think i should stop using the cheap cork ones? I'm willing to put out the extra 20 bucks for a set if i dont have to keep doing this all the time..

I dont need to use the silcone gasket stuff on rubber gaskets?

Re: Alright seriously..... (valve covers)

I would put some type of sealant on them at least just to keep them in place as you lower them onto the head.

No, you don't need sealant on the rubber gaskets.
