1988 5L TBI "Knock Sensor" NEED HELP

Hey guys...
I have a 1988 formula. 305 TBI 5 spd and im having a problem with, what i think its the knock sensor and or (esc modual). I bought the car about 1 month ago running great ( no white smoke ), Couldnt ask for it to run better.. When i got it home I took it out to get a safety and e test and thats when the problems started.. the temp shot up to 100+ c and the car red a code 43... ( this only happens when its hot ) what i would like to know is why the car has A lOT of white smoke comming form the exhaust ( i heard if the knock sensor is shot it retards the timing up to 20 deg.) could this be y its smoking... engine also shakes a lot at an idle , it kinda revs up and then dies down worse as it gets hotter...and keeps doing this... the emissions faild (of coarse ) the HC(ppm) was more then double , everything else... pass... is there a way to test the knock sensor and ESC modual so i no what on is wrong and dont change the wrong one..... the only code i have is a 43 ... and system pass (12) if you know why this is smoking like this and know tho to fix it ..please help
thanks
