starting car up question/issue random occurences

Hey all i just have a question on what you think my issue could be, my car when i turn the key will always start up...eventually. sometimes i turn the key and vroom ready to go, other times it will go the standard like trying to start up noise, and once i feather the gas a little it will start up...so i have no idea what the issue is.
Overall the car itself has never failed me, just sometimes i takes longer to start up and then other times it just right away...
fuel pump? starter?
i have no idea.

if anyone has any ideas let me know...its a 1985 trans am 305 TPI
so if you have any troubleshooting i should do or ideas of what it could be lemme know. thanks in advance.

Re: starting car up question/issue random occurences

Any pattern to it all? Like does it only not want to start if the engine is still warm, only on cold days etc etc etc?

I would start by inspecting/replacing the cold start injector. I'm pretty sure you have one, but could be wrong. Check for good spark. Check fuel pressure.

You will of course have better results checking these things out while the issue is happening.

How does it run once it is started?

Just need a little more info.

it probably has to do with the engine being cold, as its worse in the colder weather usually. the car is also a bit rough with gas on initial drive/start up but once the engine gets going for a few minutes everything works and accelerates and has power when i need it.

Do you have access to a scan tool? It would be nice to know if the computer is in open or closed loop mode. If it happens only in open loop then there are only a handful of sensors to check.

Does it run a bit rough at first always or just after having a hard time starting it.

When you check your fuel pressure you should have good pressure, but also look to see if it bleeds off quickly. You might have a leaky injector.
