how come car runs rich when I connect the IAC?

Car: 89 IROC convert.
Engine: tpi 305
Transmission: T-5
Axle/Gears: 3.42 10 bolt
how come car runs rich when I connect the IAC?
With the IAC closed and disconnected the car runs good under throttle, but idles poorly. With the IAC connected, the idle is worse, and the car reeks of gas like its waaay rich. Anybody know why? I've been fighting this since I changed to a manual trans and put headers on the car. its an 89 TPI 5.0.
