Maybe she's knockin now, too many bottles??

305 with 130,000 miles on the clock. Always kept up on the maintenance, etc. Been spraying the car for the past 30,000 miles, always at a safe A/F and at most a 75 shot. Probably ran 25 or more bottles through it at the track. It began to make a slight knocking noise, sounds like its coming from the back of the motor than the front. Could the 305 be on its way out with a bearing or could it be something else. It does it at all times, warm or cold. Car has 60 psi of oil pressure. Doesn't sound like a lifter or anything but maybe? With the radio on you can't hear it, but while sitting in a drive thru with the window down and the radio off, its pretty evident but not loud enough for others to hear.

So what should I check out first guys? Help me out here.

Check your flywheel for cracks.

Yeah I thought of that too, I will probably just go ahead and throw a new one in it if I pull the transmission.

But I've honestly never heard what a roller lifter sounds like going bad in a small block chevy, never had one go bad on me. To they tick or make a small knocking sound?

Probably a collapsed piston skirt.
Lifter problem will be a half-speed knock. Post a video of the sound would help.
BTW, thats the way to work a high mile 305 .
(you been wantin' that tree-fiddy anyway...)

Re: Maybe she's knockin now, too many bottles??

Honestly its not loud enough to hear on a video, that is why I'm just taking it easy on it until I find out the culprit. It hasn't gotten to be a major problem yet, I just miss spraying it out of the hole at the strip.

It doesn't even use any oil after flogging it at the strip repeatedly, and with the noise. If it was a skirt, wouldn't it consume oil?

I'm leaning towards a wrist pin or a flex plate. It doesn't sound like a bearing because its more of a hollow sounding knock, not a rattle sound. Maybe if someone would give me advise on my 350 build in the TPI section, I would get some ideas and get a move on on that project.

No, it's all below the oil ring. If you do pull it down, let us know what you find. I'm curious, since I recommend nitrous for high mileage 305s.

As do I. If it blows, you're not out anything but a boat anchor.

Appreciate the replies, I'll dig this back from the dead when I finally pull the trusty 305.
