1992 Camaro - starting issues

I bought a 1992 Camaro RS (305 TBI) from some guy who needed the cash as much as I needed something to drive. With what I paid, I thought he was the chump until the issues started arising...

I can’t get the car to start. Upon hearing that he had rebuilt the starter himself, I replaced it altogether. Still nothing. When I turn the key I don’t even get a click or any sound from the starter/solenoid at all. I do have power, the positive cable is brand new, too.

What’s next? For a while I was able to wiggle the positive cable a bit to get it to start - but I think the solenoid was bad because the plastic cap was moving around. Now - nothing.

I thought I was done with cars for a while after I picked up a bike this summer - but it looks like I’m back in the thick of it. Any good advice would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks

Is the "Security" light on the dash panel lit?

If you jump the terminals on the starter solenoid, does it start?

No the security light is not on.

I need to try jumping across the terminals. I've bought two bum car jacks this week so I have to get another to check that out.

Re: 1992 Camaro - starting issues

Ok, so my workday is over and I go outside to try jumping the solenoid. I figure "why not try the key, just to try it", and it started up.

So... I guess that eliminates a starter/solenoid/cables to and from issue...?

So what now? Could there be something in the ignition wiring thats giving me this headache? and if so, what can I do to bypass it and prevent further issue until I can really get down and rewire this thing?

You need to check out some of the other threads about security bypass. There's lots of info on that

Re: 1992 Camaro - starting issues

I have had that prob twice. I opened my hood and looked around, didn't see anything, closed the hood and it started. I think it has something to do with the security but I'm not sure. Mine is unplugged because I cant find the controllers for it.
Anyone know where you can get replacement controllers?

Do you hear the fuel pump start,if not probably the VATS pick ups in ignition bad. Can be bypassed with resistors, did mine with parts from Radio Shack for about 2.00 bucks.

Re: 1992 Camaro - starting issues

I just fixed this problem (or simular one) in my 92. It was the ignition switch that had gone bad. Car stopped on me at the car wash...right after everyone there complimented me on how sharp my car was...lol...very embarassing....anyway the switch is down the steering column...when I turned my key everything would light up (security light stayed on) would not turn....the rod that slides over the ignition switch was not moving far enough to start the car... I bypassed the VATS at the same time. My plan is to install an aftermarket alarm and remote start around stimulus/income tax time.
